There are a wide variety of ocular diseases our doctors can diagnose, treat, and manage.

Dry Eye Syndrome: This is a condition in which there are either an inadequate amount of tears to lubricate the surface of the eye, or the tear quality itself is poor. There are ways to manage dry eye syndrome and help the sufferer feel more comfortable, but in most cases, it will be a long term affliction.

Keratoconus: This is a disorder of the cornea that is characterized by the conical shape instead of the gradual curve a normal cornea should have. Without proper diagnoses and treatment, the continuing change of the cornea can create scar tissue which can eventually lead to a reduction in vision. The structural change that slowly thins out the cornea is usually slow in progression and includes different options for treatment. Corrective contact lenses designed specifically to reshape the individual’s cornea are generally an effective treatment. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to correct the corneal shape.

Diabetic Retinopathy: This is a condition caused by complications of diabetes. When the blood sugar levels are not controlled, blood vessels around the retina can swell and begin to leak fluid and even bleed. In many cases, this can lead to severe vision loss and eventual blindness. It is important very important if you have diabetes to have the back of your eyes examined regularly.

Cataract: This is a condition in which the lens of the eye becomes cloudy. This can be either a single spot on the lens, or cover the entire eye. This is one of the most common causes of blindness, but can also cause blurry or hazy vision. The most common treatment of this problem is cataract surgery, where the cataract is removed and replaced.

Macular Degeneration: This is a condition which is commonly related to the natural aging of the eye. As blood circulation decreases in the back of the eye, the tissues around the back of the eye begin to breakdown. This leads to vision loss. In some cases, treatment can be as simple as changing diet, or adding vitamins and minerals that could be lacking in the diet.

Glaucoma: Is a disorder in which the pressure of the inside of the eye is abnormal. When the pressure is too high, permanent damage to the optic nerve may occur and even lead to partial permanent vision loss or blindness.
